Well they claim that tuna can be high in mercury. But not all of it is and some has higher levels than others. Also it is better for you to eat tuna packed in water than in oil.
As far as the mercury goes if you eat a bunch of tuna than just treat it as if you have mercury poisoning and you should be fine.
Take Selenium, vitamin E, gltathione, garlic, methionin, and cystine to neutralize mercury and detoxify harmful metals like mercury. Use alfalfa, apple pectin, beta carotene with other carotenoid, and vitamin c with biovlavonoids to help remove toxins and toxic metals from the body.

Tuna (and other large long lifed fishes) are pelagic (ocean going) fish that eat other fish and live a long time, that's the problem.
Mercury builds in the bodies of the animals because when tuna eat other smaller fish, they collect their lifelong share of mercury too which is in the seas food chain.
Tuna steaks in cans tend to be taken from big (and so old) fish so they do have a large build up of mercury. When I say large though, it's well below recommended safe limits for adults. I'd be cautious giving it to a pregnant woman (as the fetus is sensitive during development) and I personally don't give tinned tuna to my baby daughter, I give her smaller fresh fish and when it come to tuna - fresh yellowfin are much smaller that the massive bluefins.
The health benefits outweigh the problem IMO
I eat cans of tuna no problem though .... I have a mouth full of metal fillings which pump out more mercury than any fish will have :)
